Shoes Can Make a Difference

This article is from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration online. For more information visit www.fda.gov.

As stylish as they may be, high heels and shoes that squeeze the feet are linked to a host of foot problems. Painful bunions, which are misaligned toe joints, are much more common in women than men. Poorly fitting shoes don't cause bunions, but can aggravate existing ones.

Some people with bunions can eliminate pain with conservative approaches such as wearing bunion pads, avoiding high heels, and buying comfortable shoes that are shaped like their feet and that provide more toe room.

Other common problems from tight shoes include nerve growths called neuromas, corns, calluses, blisters, and hammertoes, a condition in which the toes are bent like a claw.

"Shoes should be comfortable right when you buy them," says Jane Andersen, D.P.M., a podiatrist in Chapel Hill, N.C. "You should be able to wiggle your toes. And shoes should have a strong sole that flexes at the ball of your foot."

Consumers also should make sure that they're wearing the right size. "Most adults don't have their feet measured when they buy new shoes," Andersen says, "but your shoe size can change as you get older because the feet can spread and lengthen."

Buch says one way to ensure that you get the right shoe size is to stand on a blank piece of paper and trace the outline of your feet on the paper with a pen at home. "Your shoe choice should completely cover the outline of your foot," Buch says, "with no lines showing outside the shoe when the shoe is placed on top of the outline you traced."

Getting The Right Fit In Athletic Footwear

“Most adults gravitate toward the shoe size they have had for the last 10, even 20 years. But keep in mind that pregnancy or weight gain may increase your foot size. Any shoes vary in size from company to company, so treat the size on the box only as a starting point. Shop for shoes late in the day, when your feet are the largest. Make sure the store uses a Brannock® device to size your feet. Always have booth feet measured before fitting a shoe and fit to the longer foot. Take time to find a quality shoe shop. Your feet are worth it.

Ask yourself these questions when trying on shoes:

-Other than length, do the footwear fit in all of the other areas? Is the heel a good fit, for instance? (That will help stabilize the rear foot when it hits the ground.)

-Does the shoe fit in the mid foot section and the arch area?

-Does it fit around the instep area?

-Does the toe box of the shoe fit the shape of the foot? Is there enough width?

It is never appropriate to “break in” a shoe. Shoes should feel comfortable from the moment you try them on. If you need a shoe horn, your shoes are too small.”

For more information about getting the right or to have your feet measured, stop by New Balance Fox Valley today. Our fully-trained fit specialists are happy to guide you through the shoe shopping experience to assure that you get the right fit.

New Balance and New Balance Fox Valley

The New Balance brand focuses on making quality athletic footwear to fit every foot. The company offers footwear in a variety of widths and sizes for men, women and children, including up to men’s size 20. By adding technology to increase cushion, add support and stability, and using materials that are lightweight and moisture-wicking, New Balance has found ways to make footwear that will enhance the wearer’s performance without compromising fit and overall comfort.

Although New Balance footwear is sold at many big-box stores throughout the United States, what many don’t understand is that there is a difference between the New Balance footwear that is sold at the chain stores and the New Balance footwear that is sold at New Balance Fox Valley.

These differences include the quality of the materials the footwear is made from, the technology that is built into the shoe, and most importantly, the amount of cushion and support in the shoe. New Balance Fox Valley also offers the most up-to-date styles. The benefit of buying these up-to-date styles is that the technology built into them is the most current, which means you have the opportunity to experience the latest and greatest in footwear.

New Balance Fox Valley opened in Appleton in 2003. The store is owned and operated by Vanderloop Shoes Inc. Like its parent-company, New Balance Fox Valley offers one-on-one customer service that starts with measuring a customer’s feet.

“Buying shoes is more than finding a size and assuming it will fit,” says New Balance Fox Valley Manager and Fit Specialist Andy Vanderloop, who stresses that just because a customer wears a certain size in one brand or style doesn’t mean they will always wear that size. Footwear fits differently depending on the shape of the shoe and the materials it is made of. Aside from the differences in footwear, feet also change.

“Your feet and shoe size can change because of reasons like weight gain or loss, pregnancy, and injury,” said Vanderloop. “I recommended treating your shoe size as a starting point and working from there.” Vanderloop suggests having your feet measured every time you shop for footwear.

Aside from footwear, New Balance Fox Valley also sells athletic and leisure apparel, hats, socks, insoles, duffel bags, and shoe care products.

New Balance Fox Valley is located at 1861 N. Casaloma Drive in Appleton – just a few blocks from the Fox River Mall. Store hours are Monday through Friday 10am-7pm, Saturday 10am-6pm, and Sunday 11am-4pm. Ten Points of Proper Fit

1. Widths and sizes can vary among brands and styles. Do not select shoes based on the size marked in the shoe, but how it fits your foot.

2. When choosing footwear, select a shoe thatconforms to the shape of your foot.

3. Have your feet measured regularly because the length and width of your feet can change due to age, injury, pregnancy and changes in weight.

4. Always have both feet measured. It is common to have one foot longer or wider than the other.

5. Go shoe shopping after you have been on your feet for a while. This is when your feet are the largest and most swollen.

6. Stand during the fit process, including when your feet are being measured and when you are trying on footwear. Assure that there is enough space for your longest toe, especially in footwear with a safety toe.

7. Make sure that the ball of your foot fits snugly into the widest part of the shoe.

8. Don’t buy shoes that are too tight with expectations that they will stretch to fit.

9. Assure that your heels fit comfortably in the shoes with minimum slippage.

10. Walk around the store (or shoemobile) in the shoes to check for proper fit and comfort. Move in positions that you would normally be in during work.

Proper fit tips from National Shoe Retailers Association, the Prescription Footwear Association and the American Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Society.
